Kratom Tea and Its Dangerous Side Effects

People who are tired of prescription medications and their side effects are turning to herbal remedies, such as kratom tea. However, this plant does not come without risks, especially in higher doses.

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tree native to Southeast Asia that grows in the forests of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. It has leaves with pinnate venation that can be green, white, or red in color. It has been used for centuries by some cultures to treat anxiety and depression.

The herb is taken in capsules, extracts, or powders. It is considered a dietary supplement in the United States, so it is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Many people who take kratom report using it for pain, addiction withdrawal symptoms, and to boost energy and mood.

Scientists believe kratom's stimulant effects are caused by its alkaloids. Mitragynine, a major kratom alkaloid, appears to interact with opioid receptors in the brain. It is believed that kratom alkaloids are also responsible for the plant's analgesic effects, as well as its reported mood-enhancing properties.

In some cases, a higher dose can produce opioid-like effects in humans. These include increased urination, itching, loss of appetite, and nausea. More serious symptoms can include constipation, dry mouth, dizziness, and hypotension.

Kratom can be bought in gas stations and drug paraphernalia shops. It is also sold online. Some kratom is of low quality and may contain contaminants like Salmonella. It is important to choose high-quality kratom for the best results. Also, adding an acidic ingredient to your kratom tea can help prevent the alkaloids from degrading too quickly.
