Thin Strap Bras - Pros and Cons

If you have a large bust, you may find that thin strap bras leave red marks and indentations on your skin. This happens when the band of the bra puts too much strain on your shoulders and neck. You can avoid this by wearing a tighter band or going up a size or two. If you find that your bra leaves indentations that don't go away, or are painful, it's time to get a better fitting bra.

Pro: Thin straps look better under spaghetti-strapped shirts and camisole tops. Plus, they are less likely to tug upright and create a'strap gap'. However, a gap can be difficult to hide under a light-colored tank or t-shirt. Thin straps can also be uncomfortable if you have upper mobility limitations, as they require more dramatic movements to put on and take off.

Con: Thin straps are more likely to slip off the shoulder and fall down. This can be frustrating and annoying, especially if it is happening often. It's also more difficult to secure your bra when you are working out or moving around. If you have this problem, a wide strap may be a better option for you.

To figure out your bra size, stand up straight without a shirt on and measure around your back and under your bust, where the band of a bra would sit. You want to be measuring in inches, and if you land at an even number, that's your band size. From there, you can use a bra size chart to determine your cup size.

The band provides 80% of your support, so it's important to make sure it fits firmly to your body. You should be able to fit three fingers up the back of the bra and two fingers under your bust. If you're unable to do this, or the back of your bra rides up when you move, it's too big and you need to go down a size.

If you're not sure what size you are, try a few different sizes and see what works best for your needs. Remember that bras have sister sizes, so if you're a 36B, you may need to try a 34C or 38A, for example. It takes some trial and error to find the right size, but if you do it correctly, you'll have a well-fitting bra that will last you for years. Just be sure to wash your bras in cold water and avoid adding heat, which breaks down the fibers. Also, hang dry or lay flat to prevent stretch. If you need to use a dryer, be careful and use a low setting. You can also use a bra extender in the back of your bra to add extra room.
